Snows Of Kilimanjaro And Death Of Ivan Illych The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Ernest Hemingway and "The Death of Ivan Ilych" by Leo Tolstoy are both excellent literary works that both deserve equal praise. Hemingway's story is about a regretful, wasted author named Harry who is lying on an African plain dying of gangrene. Ivan, the main character in Tolstoy's story, is dying of a incurable illness and reminiscing of his life and grieving over everything he did not do right. Both stories have equally effective points of view told in third person narrative. "The Death of Ivan Ilych" has more realistic conflicts than does "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" which has extremely powerful symbols. Both Hemingway and Tolstoy are successful in coupling these three elements with various themes to make each of the stories equally enjoyable. The point of view used in "The Death of Ivan Ilych" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" is a third person narrative, and has been used effectively in both stories. Each of the authors use a shifting form of narration that efficiently helps to depict both Harry's and Ivan's situation. In "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," Ernest Hemingway's narrative changes from viewing the couple to inside Harry's mind through a series of italicized flashbacks and since the two perspectives are differentiated in the text the plot is relatively easy to follow. The narrative in "The Death of Ivan Ilych" is more complicated than "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." Tolstoy directs attention to Robbins - 2 various perspectives: from Ivan's mind looking out, from the point of view of other characters, and from the outside focusing in on various characters. Hemingway uses a narrative that is direct, most of which is dialogue, and through this the story unfolds: "I've been writing," he said. "But I just got tired." "Do you think you will be able to sleep?" "Pretty sure. Why don't you turn in?" "I like to sit here with you." "Do you feel anything strange?" he asked her. "No. Just a little sleepy." "I do," he said. (Hemingway, 452) Tolstoy, on he other hand, comments throughout the narration, interpreting each incidence: He reached home and began to tell his wife about it. She listened, but in the middle of his account his daughter came in with her hat on, ready to go out with her mother. She sat down reluctantly to listen to this tedious story, but could not stand it long, and her mother too did not hear him to the end. (Tolstoy,156) Both points of view have aspects that simplify them, as well as aspects that create confusion. Hemingway effectively uses italicized sections to separate Harry's flashbacks from reality while Tolstoy's narration is not as easy to comply with considering that there is no device to contrast the different perspectives. Tolstoy's writing is an interpretation of the occurrences in Ivan's life where as Hemingway's is more dialogue making it more challenging to interpret. Considering both stories have complicated narration with styles of writing that can be confusing as well as both using different literary devices to aid in easing any confusion, the point of view in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" is no more effective that in "The death of Ivan Ilych." The conflicts in "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and in "The Death of Ivan Ilych" are Robbins - 3 extremely similar and are both supported by a theme of coming to terms with a wasted life. The core of all conflicts is the external strife between both Harry and Ivan and the terminal illnesses that they battle. Since neither are in a position to overcome these diseases, various internal struggles arise. Hemingway and Tolstoy both describe various failure and regret issues the main characters must examine: Now he would never write the things that he had saved to write until he knew enough to write them well. Well, he would never fail at trying to write them either. Maybe you could never write them, and that was why you put them off and delayed the starting. Well he would never know, now. (Hemingway, 438) Harry's struggle concerns things he failed to complete while Ivan's is about all that he had accomplished through methods that were not morally right: "?Yes, it was all not the right thing,' he said to himself, ?but that's no matter. It can be done. But what is the right thing?'" (Tolstoy,180). Analysis of Argentinean Debt Crisis: IMF and Government Actions Essay

The Argentina debt affected the country between the late 90’s to the early 2000’s and can be attributed to misdiagnosis and ineffective policy. During this time the IMF and Argetina’s government worked closely together. Previous to the crisis Argentina had been celebrated for its economic policies and growth. The government worked to put in place conservative economic policy, including the privatization of companies, looser trade regulations, among other conservative changes. Economic growth in that period appears to have been in large part the result of increasing amount of international debt. Before the end of the 90’s, things began to fall apart. The crisis can be traced back to the 80’s, where the country experienced extreme hyperinflation. The currency inflated at over 5000% this was during the presidency of Carlos Menem and, his finance minister, Domingo Cavallo who attempted three ways to limit inflation. The first was a stabilization act with the backing of a large private firm; the second attempt was to buy up certificates of deposit into government bonds (Nataraj & Sahoo 2003). After the first two methods failed the third option was introduced, this was to peg the argentine peso to the US dollar. To fixate the exchange rate, the currency board kept up dollar reserves, and could not change the supply of pesos without the same change in dollars as well (Sergio L., Eduardo, & Augusto 2003). By the mid-1990s, inflation had vanished but the government were unable to alter many of the concretionary policies that stabilized inflation yet hurt growth. Whip it

Bliss is curious about joining the roller derby team while in Austin, TX for the derby event, but her friend, Pass, is doubtful about her actually trying out for the team. Pass brings up several factors about why Bliss wouldn't try out Including her not having the guts to try out, her not being as tough as the other roller derby girls, and the fact that her mother would disapprove of It. Plus, although Pass TLD exactly mention It, Bliss wasn't the appropriate age to Join the team. She had to be 21 to join the team and she was only 17.I felt like Pass was bringing up all of Bliss' flaws not to put her down, but to make her want to prove her wrong and go for it. As the movie explores the relationship between Bliss and her mother, I feel like nobody's really happy with each other's decisions. Bliss wants to find direction in her life and follow her heart's desire while her mother aspires for her to be a beauty queen like she once was as a teen. Even though they both don't really see eye to eye about their differences, Bliss goes along with her mom's wishes o please her, so in a sense, I suppose her mother is happier in the situation.The things that they have In common are their love for each other even if it's not shown too often throughout the film, and their passion for what they love to do In life: Bliss' roller derby racing and her mother's beauty pageants. How Bliss and her mother view each other Is pretty similar. Her mother sees beauty and Intelligence wealth Bliss, and feels that both can surface by competing in the beauty pageants. Bliss also sees the beauty in her mother, although her mom feels like this has faded away wrought the years.Bliss' mother sees herself as a former beauty queen who has aged and often reflects on the days when she was younger. Bliss sees herself as a girl who just isn't the beauty pageant type, but has other special qualities about her that may not set well with her mother. I view Bliss as a girl who knows that there's courage a nd strength within her and strives to bring them out. From the very beginning of the movie, I felt that she knew there was a certain path she was supposed to be following but was uncertain of what It was.From her dyeing her hair blue and becoming Interested In roller derby at the head shop that day, I think she knew that she was different and was destined to be a free spirit. I view her mother as someone who honestly just wants the best for her daughters, but can be too overprotective of them and unreceptive to what they truly want out of life. She's definitely strong and stands firm in her beliefs, it even showed in her facial expressions that she was a woman of dignity. I got the feeling that she knew how tough life can be and she didn't want her daughters going through any mind of pain if she could help it.I could see her reasons for wanting to protect Bliss from the world, but I feel that she shouldn't have pushed her beauty pageant dreams onto Bliss. With Bliss' participation i n roller derby racing, I feel like it liberated her and helped her confront her mother about what she really wants to do with her life. I also feel that she gave her father a sense of pride which we can see by him putting her Jersey number In the yard at the end of the movie. We could see how her decision affected her family as a whole.What roller derby almost costs her was her almost consumed by her newfound life of roller derby, and she had to really face the good and bad that came with it. Vive experienced this as well with some of my leisurely choices. Vive learned that no matter what you're passionate about, there's always an upside and downside waiting for you Just down the road. The key to not letting the downsides knock you off your axis is to stay focused and to never let friends and family fall to the wayside while pursuing that passion.

Floods in India and Its Control Essay

Countries irrigated by an adequate river system are in many ways blessed. These rivers not only help agriculture, but they provide a cheap and efficient transport system for the development of internal trade. The saying goes—land divides, seas unite. But waterways bring also a good deal of misery to the people by causing devastating seasonal floods In India, for example, the sub-Himalayan regions of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal and Assam are heavily flooded by the rivers of the Gengetic basin and the Brahmaputra, almost every rainy season. It brings untold sufferings to the people of these low-lying plains. Millions are rendered homeless; men and cattle die in large numbers; the damage to property including standing crops is incalculable. Besides, floods affect the health of the locality and increase the incidence of cholera, typhoid and other water-borne diseases. In 1922 and 1998 flood in North Bengal left a trail of devastation, essentially in Malda, Murshidabad areas. Floods are caused by an excessive flow of water in rivers during the rainy seasons, due mainly to torrential rain in catchment areas. This may be due to two natural causes. First, the melting of ice in glacier on the mountains may thus supply a river with volumes of water much in excess of its containing and carrying capacity. Secondly, heavy rains on the mountains cause an excess of water supply. In either case, the excess water overflows the embankments and submerges the low-lying plains. Bursting of dams and also Bridges in protective embankments lead to inundation. This causes large-scale deforestation. As for example, in the Terai regions during the war, floods destroyed the natural embankments of a river. Occasionally earthquakes, by changing the course of a river, or by raising its basin or choking and silting the riverbed cause flood Another contributory cause is the construction of railway bridges without leaving provision for the natural outflow of flood-water. Of course, floods in an agricultural country have often been looked upon as a blessing in disguise. Floods leave behind on the submerged areas a rich alluvial or silt-deposit, which greatly increases the fertility of the soil. This soil on either side of the Nile owes its fertility to the annual flooding of the area, which submerges large regions, even after the construction of Aswan Dam in Egypt. Nehru used to say—give unto the river what naturally belongs to her, i. e. homesteads should not be built on riversides or on temporary char lands. That is a sure preventive measure, better than steps to resist after-effects. Men have tried from the earliest times to build protective embankments against the incidence of floods. Ordinarily these can be made sufficiently strong to resist the usual type of floods. A system of canals to irrigate the low-lying plains affords considerable escape route for the excess water caused by a normal rainfall. But these embankments should have to be maintained properly. Modern river engineering and hydro-dynamics, however, have led to a fundamental change in the principle. It is now realised that effective control of flood should begin at the source. Flood control, therefore, in these days has moved upstream. This includes the building of adequate reservoirs in the head stream area and the application of the principle of multipurpose river control. The building of a sufficient number of reservoirs is a long-drawn and costly process. Public sentiment may not take kindly to it; for it necessarily causes large-scale displacement of population as has been noticed in the Narmada Banchao movement of Sm. Patakar. For taming the turbulent Damodar, the age-long ‘river of sorrow’, by constructing the Tilaya, Mython and other dams across her, many Bihar villagers had to be shifted, and this was not liked by the local population. The future, no doubt, belongs to successful working of multi-purpose schemes. So petty objections, raised by individual or local interest, must give way before the larger needs of the people. In recent years, the rainy season has brought heavy floods all along the sub-Himalayan plains. The overflow of the tributaries of the Ganges and the Bramhaputra has caused untold sufferings to the people of these localities. Embankments have been broken, bridges have been washed away; villages have been waterlogged, cutting off all communications for days together. The utmost damage has been caused to the towns and villages of Assam by the Brahmaputra floods. The government must put up protective embankments; help the easy drainage of water by removing artificial obstructions, and by adopting local remedies for particular regions. It has been rightly said, â€Å"Rivers that overtop their banks and flood the adjacent lowlands offer a challenge to the people who must be ready to protect their fields from inundation. â€Å"
